CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs and District Royal Canadian Legion Branch #53 held its Remembrance Day service at Hugh Sutherland School on Nov 11. Attending the ceremony were many town residents, RCMP officers, legion members including lifetime members and veterans William Gibson and William Ryan.

The ceremony began with Sgt. at Arms Tim Kaczmarski bringing in the Colour Party, followed by O Canada.

Following the national anthem, the Carstairs legion branch's president, Mark Moncur, spoke as the event's MC and pastor Ian Mason read the call to worship.

After the reading of the honour roll, the famous poem In Flanders Field was read.

Moncur then introduced a short video of actor Sam Elliott paying tribute to veterans by telling a story of a pair of brothers who fought at Omaha Beach.

The laying of the wreaths to honour those lost then took place. Among those who laid wreaths were representatives from the federal and provincial governments, the town and county, Carstairs and District Royal Canadian Legion Branch #53, RCMP, Carstairs and District Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Didsbury Army Cadets, and many more. Also laying down wreaths were Korean War veterans Frank Boe and Peter Choi.

The service concluded with two minutes of silence followed by the playing of Reveille on the bugle.
