Demand-side management can help better use what is already generated

With many different sectors able to move to hydrogen use, Adnan Khan, an energy systems analyst, said he calculates the future demand for hydrogen to hit 13,000 tonnes of per day.

“I think we can be a lot more ambitious in terms of the magnitude of investment,” said Binnu Jeyakumar, director of clean energy at the Pembina Institute.

“When a business makes a decision, and the carbon price is part of that decision, it's a bit unfair to pull the rug out [from under] them later,” said Tristan Goodman president of The Explorers and Producers Association of Canada, a national lobby group representing Canada's oil and gas industry.

Highlights from the federal plan stated that the oil and gas sector is the single largest contributor of greenhouse-gas emissions in Canada, accounting for 26 per cent of national emissions in 2019, totalling 191 megatonnes. The new plan will see the industry cut emissions to 110 megatonnes by 2030.
