“The bus showed up at the band office stop and the bus driver asked clients to provide tickets to get on. One of the clients did not have a ticket and got very upset. The driver told him he couldn’t come on and then he was punched in the face.”

While interest is high in implementing self-administered policing in Indigenous communities, Blake said “restrictive and discriminatory” practices in the system in Canada and a lack of research have made policing a challenging endeavour for Indigenous communities to pursue and sustain.

The Frog Lake First Nations Powwow was held at the end of July.

A team is using drones and other technology to carry out a search west of the local cemetery, which was identified as a potential site by community members.

The camp provided good hands-on experience and allowed participants to get a taste of what it is like to be a firefighter.
