INNISFAIL - The Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD) three-year education plan’s 2022 goals include having at least 82 per cent of division teachers and students satisfied with parental involvement in decisions about student education.
Venues to gather related parent input will include surveys, work of the division’s parent matter committee, parent-teacher interviews and the work of school councils, officials say.
The 2021-24 plan was developed in the context of the provincial government’s business and fiscal plans, and is designed to provide stakeholders with goals and objectives for enhancement of education opportunities for students in the 11,000-student CESD.
The board of trustees approved the plan in May 2021. It includes yearly goals in areas such as academic excellence, social emotional well-being, and career connections.
Academic excellence aims to have students reach their highest academic potential, and the social emotional well-being aims to have students and staff have the knowledge, skills and attributes to respond to their social emotional needs and the needs of others.
The career connections aim is to give students plans beyond high school to enrol in post-secondary learning, career training or beginning a career in a chosen field.
In the field of academic excellence, the 2022 performance measure goal is to have 82 per cent of teachers and parents satisfied with parental involvement in decisions about the student’s education. The target in 2021 was 81 per cent.
“We believe that there is room for growth regarding parental involvement in decisions surrounding their child’s education,” the plan states. “We look forward to unveiling our new website which provides multiple opportunities for parent interaction.”
In the field of social emotional well-being, the 2022 performance measure goal is to have 85 per cent of teachers, parents and student be satisfied that student model the characteristics of active citizenship. In 2021 the target was 84 per cent.
“A high priority for CESD is to support the positive development of self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making,” the plan states.
“The framework is designed to provide information about social emotional indicators, promising practices for social emotional development in an effort to support social emotional well-being of all students. In addition, it highlights possible training and/or professional development opportunities for education staff and parents.”
In the field of career connection, the 2022 performance measure goal is to have 60 per cent of students move from high school to post-secondary within six years of entering Grade 10. The goal in 2021 was 56 per cent.
“Career teams in our high schools are working with students in grade 10, 11 and 12 to assist with future planning and access to post-secondary opportunities,” the plan states. “Schools are facilitating virtual presentations from colleges and universities, helping our students to envision education beyond grade 12.”
The three-year education plan sets out expenses by program in 2022, including $1.18 million pre-kindergarten, $97 million for kindergarten - Grade 12 instruction, $18 million for facility operations and maintenance, $7 million for transportation, and $4.2 million for board and system administration.
