Innisfail High School honoured the best and brightest students and athletes of the 2013-14 school year on Oct. 9 in the Innisfail Middle School gymnasium.

Shawn Abraham was named the best academic Grade 12 student by Innisfail High School's teaching staff, with Donovan Pineau picking up male athlete of the year. Sydney Daines was honoured as female athlete of the year. Pineau and Daines received their rings in recognition of their achievements.

“Both athletes of the year, Donovan and Sydney, are worthy recipients of the 2014 award,” said Jeff Anderson, vice-principal and athletic director of the school. “Donovan is an outstanding athlete and he is a leader by example no matter what sport he plays, while Sydney's passion for excellence sets her apart from the crowd.”

Anderson added that while athletic skills were important, the school was quick to recognize that academics are an important aspect of school and that the award nominees and winners were well balanced.

The teaching staff recognized academic achievement for all subjects from grades 9 to 12 with honour roll awards and provincial scholarships presented during the evening.

Alyson Blain, Faith Gette and Riona Wiberg were recognized as the top academic Grade 9 students, while Rebekah and Elizabeth Maciborsky were named the Grade 10 recipients. Grade 11 student Mitchell Peters was recognized as having the highest overall average and Shawn Abraham took the Grade 12 honour.

Shay Jamieson and Baily Simpson were winners of the Innisfail High School Student Union award and Rael Blain won the Alberta Citizenship Award, which recognizes outstanding community service.

The Alexander Rutherford Scholarship was awarded to 14 Grade 12 students by Charlene Preston, assistant to Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Kerry Towle, for achieving marks above 75 per cent in five designated courses.

A full list of all winners will be available on the Innisfail High School website.
