Hollywood legend loves local stock

The Innisfail Auction Market is the last place you would expect to find an Alberta based Hollywood western film icon.

Every year, during the P & H Ranching Co. Bull & Gelding sale, John Scott, of John Scott Productions and John Scott Motion Picture Animals, pays a visit to the Innisfail Auction Market and leaves with new animals for his working ranch near Longview, Alberta.

“This last year,” said Corrine Parsonage of P & H Ranching Co. “John bought three horses and two Charolaise bulls from us. He will be using the cattle for breeding, and the horses for his motion picture business. He has been a long time supporter of P & H going back 10 years at least.”

She added that Scott is well respected in the ranching industry and film production circles and they appreciated his support.

With film credits going back to 1970 on such productions as Legends of the Fall, Shanghai Noon, X Men 2, Night at the Museum I and II (and now III), Lord of the Rings, Unforgiven, Little Big Man, and TV series Heartland, Hell on Wheels, and Klondike, Scott has been an active proponent of Alberta film production.

“One of my favorite roles is when I stunt doubled for Roy Rogers in the mid 70's,” said Scott.

Working out of his century-old ranch near Longview, Alberta, Scott not only provides technical expertise for films and commercials, he also rents props, animals and has an authentic western town that has been used in many Hollywood blockbusters.

He likes buying animals through his long time friend, Duane Daines, auctioneer at the Innisfail Auction Market.

“I've been buying animals from Duane since he started calling auctions in the early 1980s,” said Scott. “He always has good quality stock and only brings in animals from ranchers who treat them well.”

Of Scott, Daines has always respected him.

“Scott is one of those buyers who come out of their way every year to buy from us here (in Innisfail),” said Daines. “He is a real cowboy and a real horse man. He knows more about horses than anyone I've known.”

Daines wonders how Scott is able to keeps going as a rancher and film wrangler/stuntman as long as he has while his own friends are thinking of calling it quits.

“Scott travels the world with his animals, and still does stunts in films. He has put Alberta on the map for film production,” said Daines. “He is a real gentleman who is a pleasure to deal with.”
