LACOMBE – A bet is a bet.
And the elected leaders of the City of Lacombe lost.
On April 4 it was payback time to Innisfail’s town council for the wager the leaders of the two Central Alberta municipalities made last month.
The bet was over who would win the senior men’s North Central Hockey League’s Vanberg Cup final series.
The Innisfail Eagles won the series four games to one against the defending champion Lacombe Generals to claim the Birds’ first league title in their inaugural season.
Mayor Jean Barclay went to Lacombe on April 4 with Coun. Gavin Bates to make sure the wager would be honoured.
It was agreed last month that the losing council would have to wear the jerseys of the other municipality’s hockey team.
And on April 4 members of Lacombe’s city council, led by Mayor Grant Creasey, grudgingly put on the home red jerseys of the Innisfail Eagles, which were on loan from the team.
More than half of the councillors also wore paper bags over their heads.
“We had lots of fun. We took the jerseys and then they had these bags set up to put on their heads,” said Barclay. “We had coffee and donuts. It was a great visit.”
Council members from Lacombe will put the Eagles jerseys on again at their next regular council meeting on April 14.
On Friday, April 25 the Innisfail Eagles will be hosting the Innisfail Eagles Awards Banquet Fundraiser at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #104 in Innisfail.
