RCMP report crime and traffic offences down from a year ago

Innisfail RCMP is reporting the total number of criminal offences, traffic violations and collisions have decreased in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same period last year.

In a report that was presented to town council on May 9, RCMP said the total number of Criminal Code offences decreased two per cent in 2011 with 155 reported incidents this year compared to 159 in 2011.

"It is encouraging to see that the number of Criminal Code offences are down from this time last year. But we still have to get through the summer which is the busiest time of year," said Innisfail RCMP S. Sgt. Lyle Marianchuk.

The RCMP report specifically noted to council there were decreases in the number of assaults, theft of motor vehicles, break and enter incidents, mischief and frauds.

However, there were increases in the number of reported drug offences and theft under $5,000 cases.

The RCMP report stated the total number of persons offences decreased in the first quarter of 2011 by seven per cent with 27 reported cases compared to 29 in 2010. Total property offences decreased four per cent with 107 reported cases in the first quarter of 2011 compared to 112 in the same period of 2010.

Mounties are reporting that the total number of traffic offences for the first quarter of 2011 decreased with 141 cases (Criminal Code and provincial statutes) compared to 297 in 2010.

Meanwhile, the total number of traffic collisions deceased in the first quarter of 2011 by 23 per cent with 44 reported cases compared to 57 in the same period of 2010.

RCMP noted there has been one reported injury collision in the Town of Innisfail this year compared to none for the first three months of 2010. The one case this year was an intersection related collision and the driver was charged with a traffic offence.
