Audiences will hear everything from classical to pop music when the Olds Community Chorus presents its latest concert May 21, 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Olds.
The theme for this concert is The Rhythm of Life.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for students and children.
"Everything seems to have a story to tell about life and we get to the theme song, Rhythm of Life, which is from Sweet Charity," says Olds Community Chorus director Theresa (Terry) Wasden. "It really is about how we go through those motions."
Wasden says the Rhythm of Life includes the cycles of birth and death, but goes much further.
"It's also about some of the characters that you meet — like the nosy neighbours and the sweethearts under the boardwalk. You know, those moments in life. So songs like A Lark in the Clear Air, it's a love song, a classical love song about sweethearts of course," she says.
"And then we have another song called Hush, which is a spiritual about death and having the glories of religion or something greater than us to help move us through it.
"Then we get to Ghost Riders in the Sky, (they're) coming to get you if you didn't behave," she adds with a laugh. "It's kind of fun."
Wasden says the first half of the concert features more classical, traditional music.
The second half has a kind of swing band feel, as they showcase Didsbury High School students Seth Peterson on drums and Amy Black on bass. Wasden says they've been well schooled by Didsbury High School music teacher Kirk Wassmer.
"He's a fantastic teacher and he has mentored these kids so they can come and play all of the music that we're doing in the second half," she says.
The Olds Community Chorus has some new wrinkles planned for the remainder of the year.
For example, they're going to be undertaking a subscriber's drive to sell more tickets for next season. The chorus is already working on one of the most famous pieces for the Christmas season -- Handel's Messiah.
Wasden will also be holding some workshops in July which will be open to the public. She recommends checking out the chorus's website, oldscommunitychorus.com, for more details.
