Plans for a community emergency shelter for the victims of domestic violence will get a boost when the Stampeders come to Olds on March 27.
The band, known for hits such Sweet City Woman and Hit the Road Jack, will play the Olds Cow Palace and proceeds will go to the Olds Emergency Shelter Society.
The Olds Kiwanis Performing Arts Society is organizing the concert in cooperation with 96.5 CKFM.
Carol Johnston, who is the Olds Kiwanis Club's past-president and who sits on the shelter society's board, said organizers looked at a number of artists for the benefit concert and the Stampeders were chosen because of the popularity of their songs.
ìCertainly if people haven't heard the name and you sing a song, they recognize it,î she said.
Johnston added organizers wanted the concert to aid a local charity and settled on the shelter society's efforts to establish a shelter in the community in the near future.
ìI knew they would be happy to have the funds donated to them.î
The show starts at 7 p.m. with Cremona's Blake Reid as the opening act.
The Stampeders take to the stage at 8 p.m.
Johnston said this is the first concert at the Cow Palace since its floor was paved last year and organizers are hoping to raise $15,000, as 1,000 tickets are available.
Tickets are $40 and are available at Stevens Jewellers, the Mountain View Museum and Archives or by visiting www.oldskiwanis.org/concert.
The Kiwanis Club will run a concession at the show while the Olds Kiwanis Performing Arts Society will run a beer garden and the shelter society will sell 50/50 tickets.
