Eleven unit crew firefighters took part in a prescribed burn at the Raven Brood Trout Station north of Sundre on April 13, with one hectare torched. Barry Shellian, an area information coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, said the one-day event was conducted to improve the land base. “We recognize that wildfire is a natural part of the ecosystem and it's been 107 years since wildfire has been on that area, so by putting that fire back on the land base it allows young grass and other forage to come back for ungulates to eat. Wildfire creates a healthier ecosystem,” said Shellian.
