Commission OK's tower

The Mountain View County municipal planning commission has approved a development permit application for the construction of a communication tower at the Harmattan gas plant property.

The Mountain View County municipal planning commission has approved a development permit application for the construction of a communication tower at the Harmattan gas plant property.

The move came during the commission's recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

The tower will be located about one kilometre east of Highway 22 and south of the Bergen Road, at SE 34-31-4-5.

The $60,000 tower will be 100 feet tall and set on a base 10 feet square.

“The proposed communication tower is required to allow the tower from a new building to connect to an old building which is down a hill and not visible (from a radio frequency perspective) without the tower at the new building,” administration said in a briefing note to the commission.

“There is not an option to co-locate on any towers in the vicinity because they need the service at their new building. This tower is going to be standing directly beside their new building to allow this connectivity to take place.”

The tower will be self-supported and will not have any guy wires, members heard.

“There is no vegetation to remove and no need for anti-climb due to it being inside the secured compound (of the plant).”

One of the conditions of the approval is that “Mountain View County will not be responsible or liable for any manner whatsoever for any structural failures, defects or deficiencies whether or not the said development has complied with the Safety Codes Act of Alberta.”
