Committee approves station improvements

The Mountain View County municipal planning commission has approved additions and improvements to a Sundre-area gas station. The move came during the commission's recent regularly scheduled meeting.

The Mountain View County municipal planning commission has approved additions and improvements to a Sundre-area gas station. The move came during the commission's recent regularly scheduled meeting.

The $582,000 upgrades are to the existing Petro Can cardlock fuel dispensing facility located just west of Sundre's west boundary adjacent to Highway 584 and 10th Street.

Suncor Energy Inc. owns the property.

“The applicant is proposing to upgrade the existing cardlock fuel dispensing facility operated by Petro Can,” administration said in a briefing note to the commission. “The proposed changes include extending the existing dike, adding an additional fuel tank, removing existing islands and improvements to the site entrance.

“Planning and development has recommended a condition granting a relaxation for all existing and proposed structures located on site to ensure the property is brought into compliance with the existing land use bylaw.

“The subject property is a developed industrial lot abutting a provincial highway and shall require an approval from Alberta Transportation to proceed with the upgrades mentioned within the application.”

Other conditions of the commission approval including the following:

• All chemicals, oil and other hazardous materials shall be stored in an approved container system and disposed of off-site, in a timely manner, by authorized personnel specializing in proper disposal methods.

• The area shall be protected from any oilfield product contamination as per Alberta Environmental Standards and Guidelines. All Petroleum Tank Management Association of Alberta approvals and requirements must be adhered to at all times.

• The applicant shall organize the storage on the lot so that it is orderly; neat and orderly appearance shall be to the satisfaction of Mountain View County.

• The applicant shall consult with the Town of Sundre to ensure all drainage is directed into the ditches located along the Town of Sundre right-of-way for 10th Street and Alberta Transportation right-of-way along the highway to the north of the lot.
