Carstairs Community Chest board of directors welcome some visitors to their annual general meeting at the town office on Feb 13.

CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs Community Chest is back for another year. The fundraising campaign will be running in the month of April and is supporting many charities.

“It’s a one-time annual collection for mostly local charities,” said Vicky Penner, chair of the campaign. “This will be the 66th annual appeal since founding in 1952, when town fathers wanted one collection, rather than many separate ones.”

Despite an economic downturn, Carstairs and area remains very generous, said Penner. In total, $69,753.55 was raised last year.

“The goal this year is to raise $70,000 to be split among 12 charities – 10 of which are local and two are from Calgary,” she said.

The 2018 local recipients will be: Hugh Sutherland School breakfast program; Chinook Arch Victim’s Services Society; Habitat for Humanity Mountain View Society; Horizon School; Mountain View Emergency Shelter; Mountain View Food Bank; Mountain View Special Riding Association; Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre; Rosebud Health Foundation; and the Carstairs Elementary School toast program.

The larger charities to be funded are the Salvation Army and STARS. These two are kept because of fiscal responsibility and emergency response, said Penner.

“We expect 2018 to be another successful campaign, and ask you to watch for our canvassers, and donate when you can,” said Penner.
