Community grant approvals reviewed

Mountain View County councillors have reviewed community grant approvals made by the community services grant review committee.

The review of rural community hall grants and the rural community grant approvals came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting. The information in the reviews was received for information.

Mountain View County provides grants to rural communities and organizations operating recreation and cultural programs in the municipality.

“This grant (rural community grants) may be used towards operating or facility upgrade costs and expenditures required for recreation and cultural programs and facilities,” said CAO Tony Martens.

“The policy is intended to address grant and funding requests from community organizations that are not eligible to receive funding under the county's other grant and funding programs.”

In all, $25,595 in rural community grants was approved, including the following:

• Bearberry Wapitana Society - $5,000 for a wagon ride at the two-day 75th anniversary celebration.

• Foothills Curling Club - $10,000 to repair roof soffit and rain gutters, utilities and maintenance.

• Meadow Creek Vaulting Club - $2,000 for training mats, floor mats, balance beam and barrel surcingle (a harness).

• Mountain View Arts Society - $5,000 for September arts festival.

• Olds Koinonia Christian School - $1,000 for parking lot expansion.

• St. George's Anglican Church - $200 for operating expenses, yard maintenance, taxes.

The rural community hall grants are provided towards the operating and facility upgrades at halls in the municipality.

“The approved funding must be used in the year in which the support was requested for, and used exclusively for the project identified in the application,” said Martens. A total of $64,877 was approved for 2014, including for the following:

• Bearberry Wapitana Society - $3,760 for upgrade of bathroom and to add flashing to prevent ice damming.

• Bergen Community Association - $7,000 for landscaping, kitchen appliances, screen, and insurance.

• Dogpound Ladies Club - $3,000 for general maintenance and operating expenses.

• Harmattan Community Centre - $7,000 for carpeting, complete lighting, bathroom sinks and vanities, and outside repairs.

• Innis Lake Community Hall - $5,000 for operating expenses, stove replacement and light fixtures.

• Melvin Hall Society - $9,000 for roof repairs, kitchen update, insulation of ceiling and walls.

• Rosebud Community Hall - $3,200 for basic operating costs and replacement of hot water heater.

• Water Valley Community Hall - $2,500 to install a water softener and expand camping area.

• Westcott Community Association - $5,912 for continuation of bathroom renovation project.

• Zella Community Association - $7,000 for insulation in attic, conversion from propane to natural gas, and installation of water heater.

Transportation grants were also approved totalling $45,000. Those groups receiving grants included Mountain View Seniors' Housing, and seniors' clubs in Carstairs, Cremona, Didsbury, Olds and Sundre.
