Mountain View County councillors have approved yearly reports on the county's municipal development plan (MDP), which sets out policies for development across the jurisdiction.

During the county's regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 24, councillors approved the terms of reference for monitoring reports to be prepared by county staff.

“The reports will help ensure the effectiveness of key plan policies and ensure that development in the county is meeting the objectives of the MDP,” councillors heard.

The reports will look at redesignation, subdivision and development decisions and whether or not they are consistent with the goals and objectives of the MDP.

“Many MDP policies are ‘should' statements, offering some degree of discretion,” said CAO Tony Martens. “As well, appeal boards must only ‘have regard' to a statutory plan. It is therefore important that annual monitoring take place to ensure the level of discretion is appropriate and not at odds with the fundamental goals and objectives of the plan.”

The reports themselves will be statistical documents, complete with maps of the county showing where redesignation, subdivision and development occurred.

They will also include the total number of development permits issued for dwellings in the agricultural preservation areas, potential multi-lot areas and growth centres.

The first report will be presented to council in December.
