Mountain View County council has approved the purchase of a new Sundre backcountry fire rescue trailer at a total cost to the county of $37,784.
The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.
The county had originally approved spending $26,746 for the new vehicle, but an error in quoting resulted in the higher cost, council heard.
The county is covering 80 per cent of the cost, with the Town of Sundre picking up the remainder of the total cost of $47,230.
In February, council heard that the department’s existing backcountry fire rescue trailer is in a state where major repairs would be needed to keep the vehicle in use.
The trailer is used to carry rescue equipment owned by the Sundre Fire Department.
In April, council approved funds for a replacement trailer.
“At the May 23 Sundre ICC (Inter-Municipal Cooperation) committee meeting, fire chief Marty Butts said an error in quoting resulted in an increased estimate for the trailer above the amount previously approved by council,” administration said in a briefing note to council.
Council passed a second motion that reads: “That Mountain View CAO, in partnership with the urban CAOs, bring back a fire equipment purchase review process to assist the ICC fire services committees in making informed decisions for future purchases of fire equipment.”
Council updated on rec funding
Meanwhile, council has been given an update on 2019 Cremona and District Recreation Board funding allocations. The move also came during the June 26 council meeting.
Allocations totaling $152,815 were approved earlier by the Cremona and District Recreation Board committee.
“The board distributes funding on behalf of Mountain View County due to the high percentage of rural residents in that community,” administration said in a briefing note to council.
“The board is responsible for ensuring that quality of life opportunities are available to the residents of the county, within the Cremona recreation district, through the development, management and support of recreational and cultural services.”
The county’s 2019 recreational funding for Cremona is based on $77.52 per capita. Allocations include the following:
• Chinook Creative Arts Foundation received $12,000 for Water Valley School upgrades.
• Cremona Community Curling Club received $7,000 to help fund a hot water tank, ice plant condenser, and dial-out alarms.
