Mountain View County council has approved $10,000 in cemetery grant funding for 10 community organizations within the municipality. The approvals came during council's recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

Allocated under the county's recently approved cemetery grant funding policy, the funds can be used for general operational expenses such as grass cutting and general maintenance, director of legislative services Jeff Holmes said in a briefing note to council.

“Approved funding may also be used for fixed outdoor assets such as benches, signage, mapping, garbage and recycling collection, storage sheds, etc. that would enhance the ambiance of the cemetery. Special project requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis,” he said.

The 10 organizations approved for $1,000 each are as follows:

• Bergen cemetery for maintenance and grounds upkeep.

• Big Prairie cemetery for maintenance, safety equipment and related costs.

• Carstairs cemetery for replacement of aging tree line.

• Cremona cemetery for re-levelling of monuments.

• Didsbury cemetery for operating costs.

• Eagle Hill cemetery for a complete major clean-up.

• Hainstock cemetery for yearly maintenance.

• Mayton cemetery for the purchase and installation of portable bathroom.

• Olds cemetery for a wrought iron bench and concrete pad.

• Westcott community cemetery for fencing and yard maintenance.

Under the cemetery grant funding policy, which was approved in September, a maximum of $25,000 can be distributed every year.
