In response to ongoing property crime in the district, Mountain View County will be hosting a number of workshops aimed at helping landowners make their properties safer and more secure.

During the March 14 council meeting, councillors passed a motion calling on administration to “organize a series of crime prevention workshops as part of a strategy under the county’s crime prevention initiative project to build community awareness and education in collaboration with similar community organizations.”

The workshops will be hosted at various community halls and would cover topics such as property crime prevention, crime prevention through environmental design, and what to do in the event of theft.

Groups that would be invited to take part in the workshops would include Olds-Sundre-Didsbury Rural Crime Watch Association, Citizens on Patrol groups, and district RCMP detachments.

“The workshops could be scheduled in a timely manner and surveys could be distributed at the workshops and on the county website to help direct and focus program development for future awareness and education campaigns,” administration said in a briefing note to council.

“Due to the significant increase in rural crime throughout Alberta, MVC council is evaluating options to improve community safety.”

Christopher Atchison, director of legislative services, said the workshops will be focused on specific issues and concerns.

“It is definitely our intention to bring in external consultants for these workshops. We need specific expertise in developing and preparing the workshops,” he said.

Dates and locations of the workshops will be announced.
