Mountain View County lowered the flags at its facilities last week in honour of murdered British MP Jo Cox, who was killed outside her constituency office in northern England on June 16.
“We think it is appropriate to recognize this MP, to show respect for that lady who spent her life in the service of the people she thought she was doing her best for,” Reeve Bruce Beattie said at the opening of the June 22 council meeting.
“It's a tragedy and a sad reflection on our society, this whole idea around becoming radical and radicalized. We need to be proud that we live in Canada and whenever we can we need to confront that type of thing.”
Cox's alleged killer reportedly shouted “Britain first” after shooting and stabbing her, a possible reference to the ultra right-wing Britain First Party.
