Flooding woes

About 60 trailers and RVs were evacuated from the Red Lodge Provincial Park campground 20 kilometres west of Bowden when the Little Red Deer River came over its banks on May 25.

About 60 trailers and RVs were evacuated from the Red Lodge Provincial Park campground 20 kilometres west of Bowden when the Little Red Deer River came over its banks on May 25.

High water flooded several group camping areas during the two-day flood event.

With vehicles evacuated well before the flooding actually started, the only impact of the flooding was to create a lot of mud and wet areas, says camp staff member Oliver Strovl.

“Fortunately there was nothing too bad,” said Strovl.

The entire campground was evacuated without incident after water levels began rising Friday afternoon, he said. The actual evacuation began at about 5 p.m.

Campers were sent to other campgrounds in the region following the evacuation.

The campground remained closed for several days to allow for cleanup.

Joanne Toews, office manager at the Mountain View County-owned Westward Ho campground, located east of Sundre on Highway 27, said there was no flooding at the facility.

The Water Valley campground was closed over the May 25-26 weekend as a precaution.
