Locals off to youth rodeo championship

Five Mountain View County youth rodeo athletes are scheduled to compete in the 2017 Rodeo's Future Championships in Edmonton next month. They are Court Nugent, Regan Tebb, Reese Wilson, Cayden Cyrankeiwic and Jayce McKean.

As of press time, 137 entries were received for the rodeo event, which includes chute dogging, calf roping, girls barrels, team roping and junior bull riding.

The championships are open to athletes ages nine to 14.

The rodeo itself is part of the larger November 8 - 12 Farmfair International, which is one of Canada's top agricultural shows, with thousands of guests gathering at the Edmonton Expo Centre to show and sell livestock.

The 2017 fair will include international buyers from the Commonwealth of Independent States, European Union, Latin America, North America, Oceania and South America, in addition to local ranchers.

Other events at the fair include the Canadian Finals Rodeo, livestock shows and 4-H competitions.

More than 95,000 people attended the fair in 2016.
