DIDSBURY – Phase 1 of a project to install signs at the main entrance to town, at the new fire hall and at other municipal buildings has begun. The price tag for Phase 1 is $80,000.

“If council completes the entire signage project, there are approximately 40 signs that will be installed,” said Christofer Atchison, manager of legislative and development services.

The project was approved by council on June 14 of this year and awarded to Landmark Signs.

“The sign was designed by BOND Creative and features unique characteristics of Didsbury such as our brick buildings and historic feel,” he said.

“Feedback has been very positive. Residents were excited to have a direct say in which signage design was chosen to move forward with when community engagement occurred in early 2016.”

Council approved the project after recognizing that the Town of Didsbury needed to extend its branding through the institution of a signage project.

“The signage intends to increase identification of municipal buildings and boundaries, efficiency of wayfinding signage, and further advance our community identity and branding to residents and visitors to the community,” he said.

“All signage will eventually be replaced as required.”

Results of a municipal signage survey stated that 86.69 per cent (417 total voters) were in favour of new signage while 13.31 per cent (64) were against.

For which design best suits Didsbury, rural township won out with 39.50 per cent (190) of the vote, while natural modern came second with 26.40 per cent (127).

Phase one is expected to be completed before the end of 2016. Phase two is being budgeted for in 2017 but has not been approved for funds yet.

At this point in time, there is no approved plan for a LED sign.
