Skate park receives boost from Flames

DIDSBURY - The Didsbury skate park project has received a big assist from a group that is more familiar with skates than skateboards.

The Calgary Flames Foundation has committed $25,000 to the fundraising drive to pay for the design and construction of a new skate park in Didsbury.

"The Town of Didsbury, on behalf of all skate park enthusiasts and residents, is very appreciative of this generous level of support from the Calgary Flames organization," said Mayor Rhonda Hunter.

The contribution from the Flames Foundation brings the fundraising total for the skate park project to just over $50,000.

The Town of Didsbury, working with the not-for-profit Didsbury Sk8park Society, has commissioned engineering plans for a facility that will cost $515,000 to construct.

"This donation amount gets us one step closer for the opportunity to double fundraising with a Community Facility Enhancement Program grant, and that application will be ready to go when matching dollars are in place," said Hunter.

"It is our belief that, having firm and committed sponsorship, such as that from the Flames, will encourage other sponsors and donors to step forward to contribute to this valuable community project and make this new recreation facility a reality for our community."

In April, Didsbury council passed a motion to hire fundraising consultant Jordan Cleland Consulting for the project at a maximum of $60,000 plus GST.
