Waste amendment approved

Mountain View County council has approved an amendment to the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission agreement. The move came by way of motion at the June 27 council meeting.

Mountain View County council has approved an amendment to the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission agreement. The move came by way of motion at the June 27 council meeting.

The amendment will allow the commission to accept up to 5,000 tonnes of waste annually from outside the members’ municipal boundaries.

In a letter sent to the county, the commission said the amendment was needed to address funding issues.

“The commission is facing issues when trying to balance the budget with the amount of waste being brought to the Didsbury regional landfill,” CAO Pat Sliworsky said in the letter. “One of the options provided involved bringing in waste from outside the boundaries of the county to help offset the loss of revenue.

“The board is only trying to bring in what was originally budgeted without filling the landfill any sooner than planned.

“If all 5,000 tonnes of waste were achieved and if this waste were to be hauled by a front load truck that averages seven tonnes per load, this would equate to three extra trucks a day.”

All member municipalities will have to pass the amendment for the change in tonnage to be made.

Council also passed a separate motion to request that the commission amend the waste services agreement to clarify that identifying locations, maintaining and funding recycle centres is the responsibility of the commission in addition to the existing responsibility for collection.
