Woman jailed a day, fined $3,500 after obstructing police

A 35-year-old woman who gave police a false name on two occasions in 2011 has been given one day in jail and fined almost $3,500.

A 35-year-old woman who gave police a false name on two occasions in 2011 has been given one day in jail and fined almost $3,500.The accused pleaded guilty in Didsbury provincial court on Wednesday to two charges of obstruction, one count of driving without insurance, one count of driving while disqualified, and two counts of breaching a court order.The accused was pulled over in Olds on May 26, 2011 during a routine traffic stop, court heard.When questioned by the officer, she gave the officer a false name. She did not have a valid driver's licence or insurance for the vehicle.On September 27, 2011 police attended a rollover accident outside Olds where the accused was questioned. When arrested at the scene for public intoxication, the accused gave police the same false name.She failed to show up for two subsequent court dates.ìI understand everything I've done was wrong,î she told Judge George Gaschner.Citing 22 days the accused spent in predisposition custody, the judge sentenced Margaret Ann Kopp to one day in jail on one of the obstruction charges, fined her $500 on the other obstruction charge, $2,500 on the no-insurance charge, $150 on the disqualified driving charge, and $300 on the two charges of breaching court orders.
