The Penhold Amazons defeated the Irma Chargers 5-4 Oct. 27. The Amazons, playing on their home ice at the Penhold Regional Multiplex, dominated on the ice in the second and third periods, said coach Doug Demott.
“It was a good game. We started a little bit slow,” Demott said.
The team's seven games into their regular season now, with three wins and four losses under their belts.
He said the women have been playing well, just not winning. About three-quarters of the players this year are new to the team.
“We're starting to gel,” Demott said.
He's expecting to see continued improvement as the season goes on.
“We'll be very competitive by the end of the year,” he said.
One of the team's main strengths is “exceptional speed” allowing them to maintain puck possession, Demott said.
As for things to work on, “shooting” was the answer.
He said the team is getting between 30 and 45 shots on the goal a game, but most of those pucks aren't finding their way between the posts.
“They're not getting clear shots on net,” he said.
The team's been on the road for five of their seven games so far this year, including kicking off October with a road trip to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge in one weekend. “The start of the year was a little tough,” he said.
The next Amazons home game is against the Calgary Warriors on Nov. 3. The match starts at 5:30 p.m. at the multiplex.
