The Central Alberta Amazons won one and lost one after playing two home games Dec. 8 and 9.

The Saturday night game saw the Amazons lose 6-0 to the Sherwood Park Steele.

“The Saturday game the full lineup had a bad game,” said coach Doug Demott. “The girls didn't get their mind into the game.”

The Amazons held the Steele to a 0-0 score during the first period, but the girls from Sherwood put five in the net during the second.

Demott said the score didn't show how many shots the Amazons had.

“We outshot them so it's not like we were outplayed severely,” he said.

Sunday's afternoon game at the Penhold Regional Multiplex was a different story – the Amazons skated away with a 4-1 win over the Calgary Warriors.

“We got a goal early,” Demott said. From there the Amazons just kept on coming.

While the Warriors did put one in on a power play, they didn't manage to catch up to the Amazons, finally pulling the goalie with about two minutes left on the clock.

“We got an empty-netter,” Demott said.

He figured the Amazons managed to win about 80 per cent of the faceoffs.

Earlier this month they defeated another Calgary team, the Titans, 2-0 at an away game.

“We controlled the play again,” Demott said.

Most teams are lucky to manage three lines whereas the Amazons boast the capability of having four, giving them shorter shifts according to Demott.

“We can skate the other team into making mistakes,” he said.

So far this season the Amazons have won nine and lost eight, ranking them about third in the league, trailing undefeated Banff who've won 15 games and tied one, and the Lethbridge Jr. Eagles who have a 10-8 record.

“We've gone through some ups and downs,” Demott said of the season so far. Lots of the players are new to the team, but they're starting to gel well.

“We're where we need to be and I think we can get to where we want to be,” he said.

The ladies get a lot of shots on goal, he said, but overall they need to improve the number that find their way between the posts.

“We still struggle to score,” he said.

“Our power play needs a little more work,” he said. However, defensively the team is doing well.

“Our penalty kill is probably one of the best in the league,” he said.

The Amazons' next home game is Dec. 15 at the Penhold Regional Multiplex against the Calgary Titans. Puck drop is at 5:30 p.m.
