Olds won gold at the Atom A Provincial Championship in Lacombe from March 17-20.
According to coach Ken Callow, they were motivated to make up for a loss in their league championship final.
"I think they used that as fuel, actually, to propel them in the tournament at provincials. When we got there, they were pretty hungry and definitely prepared to play hard," Callow said.
Olds defeated Wetaskiwin 8-2 in the gold medal game. They beat the host Lacombe 9-1 in the semifinals.
During the round robin, they finished with a 3-0 record and outscored the opposition 42-6.
"The team was a pretty special one this year in terms of individual abilities," Callow said.
Rhett Miller was the tournament's scoring champion, with eight goals and 17 assists in five games.
William Christian had the most goals, with 17.
The team did not have a backup goalie so Sawyer Marshall played the whole time.
It's also a team of only 13 so players became well-conditioned, Callow said.
"We definitely faced our fair share of adversity with fatigue, but the kids managed that well. By the end of the season they were playing a full 60 minutes whereas the other teams were unable to," he said.
Callow said five players will return next year. The rest will move on to the next age group and he expects several to play in the peewee AA stream.
