The Olds Spitfires bantam AA team finished regional play over the weekend at O.R. Hedges Park with a 1-1-1 record.

They tied the Beaumont BoSox 14-14 on Friday, then beat them 9-8 on Saturday, before losing 18-5 to the Innisfail Indians on Sunday.

"It was a really tight game until the last couple of innings when we just kind of started to make some unforced errors and Innisfail capitalized on them," said head coach Rick Lobe.

The Spitfires now enter the final tiering round, hoping to end up in Tier 3 or 4.

"We're in the middle of the back, like we thought we would be, for having such a young group of players," Lobe said.

This Spitfires team, which includes a number of first-year bantams who've moved up from peewee last year, will play two more weekends before the Baseball Alberta provincials start at the end of July.

"It should be interesting. I'm looking forward to it. It should be challenging yet I think we'll stay pretty competitive throughout the rest of the year. Boys are improving every week so hopefully we'll play up to our potential," Lobe said.

"Young teams tend to make a lot of mistakes. We've been playing really, really well as of the last two weeks. We've come on strong. We had that one little hiccup against Innisfail but other than that, our boys have really turned the corner, really started to play some good ball."
