When she's not barrel racing, Trish Brown is a teacher in Airdrie. She's pleased to see some of her former students share her passion for the sport.

"It's funny how some of these kids that I've come in contact later in life I see barrel racing. So it's kind of exciting when you think, 'oh my gosh, I taught her (in) kindergarten and now she's barrel racing,'" she says.

Brown was born in Calgary. She figures she got into rodeo at a very early age; "probably my first Little Britches rodeo, I was probably three or four," she says. "Just trotting around the barrels. Just slow, you know, trotting on my dad's horse."

Brown is now 53 years old.

She was the go-round winner at the 1987 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and lists that as her greatest accomplishment.

She loves the fast pace of barrel racing — and just being around horses.

"I enjoy being with my horses. It's a fun event, barrel racing," she says.

There's another reason she stays on the rodeo circuit.

"I guess at this stage in life, it's a social gathering that we have going on here and it's quite a bit of fun," she says. "Before that, it was just kind of what I did. Our family was into rodeo and that was kind of what we did. So, yeah, I just enjoyed it."
