Olds College Broncos women's basketball head coach Avery Harrison has been named the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Harrison received the award on Feb. 27 during the ACAC Women’s Basketball Conference Championship banquet held in Fort McMurray.

The ACAC women's basketball championships were held in Fort McMurray Feb. 28-March 2.

This is Harrison’s fifth ACAC Coach of the Year award. He previously won it during the 1991-92 season with SAIT, 1997-98 with Mount Royal College (now Mount Royal University), then in 2011-12 and 2013-14 with Lethbridge College.

Harrison, who has coached in the ACAC for over 30 years, guided the Broncos to a 17-4 record in the regular season, good for second in the ACAC South while consistently staying within the Canadian Colleges Athetic Association (CCAA) national rankings throughout the season.

Perhaps the most notable victory of the season came on Feb. 8, as Harrison earned his 500th career ACAC victory in the Broncos’ 82-67 win over the Red Deer College Queens in Olds.

Linda Henderson, athletic director at Olds College, praised Harrison for his efforts throughout the season.

"Avery has done an outstanding job this year at Olds College,” she said. “He recruited some exceptional student-athletes to add to his already strong roster. He then worked hard to utilize all of their individual strengths to develop them into an outstanding team.

"His patience and his desire to teach, guide and lead his team to excel makes him a natural choice to be the ACAC Coach of the Year.”

Geordie Carragher is an athletics information officer for Broncos Athletics.
