Members of the Special Olympics Olds & District (ODSO) team turned in a strong performance during the 2019 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games in Calgary this past weekend.

The team was especially strong in bowling.

A total of 10 bowlers attended in two teams: the Olds Raiders and the Olds Phoenix.

The Olds Raiders won five bronze medals. Collectively, the two teams won six silver and one bronze medal in singles.

Following are medals received by members of Olds Phoenix: Andrew Strandquist, Tyler Slack and Derek Hallet all won silver. Cathy Vickers won bronze.

Marie Davis, Mike Dougan and Kenny Morin of the Olds Raiders each won silver medals.

This was the first time Strandquist and Vickers had even attended provincial Winter Games, so ODSO chair Karen Mengersen was very impressed to see them win medals.

"It was just such a pleasant surprise for them," Mengersen said.

Alpine skier Brian Tabor also managed to get in one divisioning race on Friday and entered two races on Sunday, battling extremely cold conditions.

In fact, the weather was so cold that alpine racing was cancelled on Saturday.

"Number 1, each player did their absolute best. They showed me the best sportsmanship that I've ever seen, in that they got along very well with the teams that they were playing with," Mengersen said. "They encouraged everybody, not just themselves.

"(They were) very polite, very outgoing, and they seemed to have a great time. They did well," she added.

"The athletes displayed great sportsmanship throughout the weekend; bowled their best; encouraged and cheered on fellow teammates and coaches. They were good ambassadors for the Town of Olds and for Special Olympics Olds & District."
