Members of the Olds College Broncos cross-country running team are showing improvement after competing at a race in Edmonton hosted by Concordia University College.
Three women and seven men competed for the Broncos in a five-kilometre women's race and an eight-kilometre men's race. There were 75 women and 59 men competing from various colleges. The Olds team did well, according to coach Rebecca Spears.
“Overall we did good,” she said. “The first race (in Red Deer on Sept. 14), I think racers were pretty nervous because they hadn't really run a race like this before, so they were getting a little bit more comfortable with having to race against these (competitors).”
Conditions were cool and cloudy.
“Weather-wise it was pretty good and the course was in pretty good shape,” Spears said.
Michelle Lyckman topped the women's contingent from Olds, with a 20th place finish, while Stephanie Dufault finished 39th and Megan Garrard finished in 42nd spot.
Zach Jackman led the men with a 35th-place finish, followed by Max Vickers in 47th spot and Jesse Dickson in 59th.
There were 12 Alberta college teams and one from B.C. that competed at the event.
The next race for the Broncos is Oct. 12 in Camrose at the Augustana University College course. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships are scheduled for Oct. 26 at the Concordia University College course in Edmonton.
