The Olds College Broncos golf team finished in fifth place at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference golf championships on September 28 and 29 at the Olds Central Highlands Golf Club.
The team of Greg Bond, Sam Kirkness, Carson Dennis and Ryley McDonald finished with a two-day total of 652, 29 shots behind the team from Grant MacEwan University, which won the championship. Carla Day of Olds College finished fifth in the individual women's event behind Megan Vermillion of GMU, who was the women's champion. Day was the lone female golfer from Olds College.
Bond said windy conditions and fast greens made play difficult on both days.
“If you were above the hole on downhill putts it was pretty much impossible to not go off the green. The wind was a huge factor, especially on the back nine,” he said.
Bond said the team struggled throughout the season in each of the tournaments it played. Prior to the championship weekend, team members played in both a northern qualifying event in Lacombe and a southern qualifying event in Lethbridge. The team finished fourth in the team competition in both events.
Ian Morrow, the Broncos' golf team coach, said although the team didn't do as well as members had hoped, he was confident that the players gained valuable experience for next season.
“This was a good event for us and we were thrilled to host it. The golf course itself showed it was not that easy to tame it,” he said.
