The Olds College Broncos men's junior varsity volleyball team is heading into the playoffs this weekend on a high note, toppling the previously undefeated Ambrose University College Lions in five sets on Saturday in Alberta Colleges Athletic League play at Frank Grisdale Hall. The Broncos won the match 20-25, 26-24, 25-21, 20-25 and 16-14 to finish the regular season with a 5-7 match record.
The Broncos will now play the Lions on Friday in the league semifinals.
“It was very tight. We knew it was going to be. We're not just going to come out and beat the best team in the league, but we really tried to keep our composure, use our heads. We knew a lot of their … big hitters and we tried to set our defence up around that and that allowed us to shut them down a little bit,” said Nick Davies, the Broncos' coach.
With the Broncos finishing fourth, Davies said part of the plan on Saturday was to come out strong and show the Lions that they weren't going to go down easily.
“That's kind of what we were aiming for as well (going into Saturday). Because we knew that we were going to have to play them (in playoffs) we thought we'll show them what we're made of now, throw a little bit of doubt into their minds and then maybe we can beat them down the road,” he said.
The Broncos went into Saturday losing to the Prairie Bible Institute Pilots on Wednesday in straight sets but rebounded Thursday, sweeping the St. Mary's University College Lightning in three sets.
Meanwhile the women were defeated in straight sets by the Lions, ending the Broncos' season. The women were also defeated on Thursday by the Lightning and on Wednesday by the Pilots.
