The Olds College Broncos men's futsal team scored their first-ever win at the Alberta College Athletics Conference level.
The historic victory took place Saturday at the Ralph Klein Centre against Lakeland College as the locals posted a 4-3 upset for their only win of the two-tournament regular season schedule.
It was almost enough for the locals to advance to the second day of play as Lakeland managed to post a 4-1 win Sunday morning over Keyano College to leapfrog the Broncos into the fourth and final playoff spot.
Hendrik Bernard Oostorink scored twice with Justin Schmidt and Franz Unterberger each scoring singles for the Broncos in their win.
The Broncos started the weekend on their home court by almost pulling off a big upset of top ranked Mount Royal University, losing 6-5 to the Cougars despite two goals from Schmidt and Erik Stromquist and a single marker from Oostorink.
In their second match of the weekend, the Broncos dropped an 8-4 decision to Fort McMurray's Keyano Huskies. Mitch Sawatzky had the brace for Olds while Unterberger and Alex Brazeau each chipped in singles.
In their final match, the Broncos fell 6-2 to Medicine Hat College thanks to four consecutive second-half goals by the Rattlers. Schmidt and Oostorink scored for the Broncos who'll miss out on the final four tournament hosted by Lakeland in Vermilion.
On the women's side, the Broncos ended the season winless after dropping all three games on their home court.
Olds dropped their opener on Friday afternoon 5-1 to Medicine Hat College, followed by a 7-3 setback to Keyano later the same evening. On Saturday they wrapped up the weekend with an 8-1 loss to Lethbridge College. Stephanie Marks was the team leading goal-getter on the weekend, scoring in each of the games, while Natalie Wood scored twice against Keyano.
The Broncos women will not qualify for the ACAC final four tourney, March 4-6 in Vermilion.
