The Olds College women's basketball team went on a three-game winning streak on the weekend, improving its record to 5-9 on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference 2013-14 season.
The Broncos travelled to Grande Prairie where they beat the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves 71-56 on Jan. 17, then travelled to Edmonton where they beat the King's University College Eagles 73-63 on Jan. 18.
They then made their way to Edmonton's Concordia University College where they dispatched the Thunder 71-56 on Jan. 19.
ìIt was a long weekend but we made a lot of forward progress. We beat a really good Grande Prairie team on their home floor that is not easy to beat up there and we battled through a bit of a sloppy game and some fatigue against King's and we came in here and we beat a Concordia team on a four-game winning streak that's playing really well this semester,î said Reg Carrick, the Broncos' head coach. ìWe're excited about the steps that we've taken.î
Although the team has improved since the first semester, Carrick said some work still needs to be done on conditioning and limiting the number of turnovers.
Carrick said new recruits Carmen Deal and April Feeney have played well since joining the team earlier this semester. The two newcomers have brought an entirely different outlook to the team since joining it earlier this month.
ìThey're playing lights out. They're a fearsome twosome, but they've also brought along Alicia Phillips, a first-year player from Winnipeg, who's played incredible. It's not just (Phillips), but these two have come in here and elevated our whole group. They're not only fantastic basketball players but they're also really good people and good leaders,î Carrick said.
Meanwhile, the men's team's struggles continue, as they lost 87-77 to Grande Prairie, 95-87 to King's University College and 74-63 to Concordia. The men are winless in 14 games this season.
