July is a busy month for Olds throwing athlete Haylin Eling.

For a second year, she has been named to the Alberta team for the Tri-Prov Western Canadian Championships, which take place July 12 - 14 in Regina.

After that, she competes in the Provincials, which will be held July 20 - 21 in Sherwood Park.

Eling has also qualified to compete in the Legion Nationals after making the open standard for the hammer throw. That competition takes place Aug. 7 - 13 in Sydney, N.S.

Local athletes, including members of the Velites Track Club, performed well during the CALTAF Track Classic and Legion Trials, held June 14 - 16 in Calgary.

Adam Jorgenson of Olds High School competed as an unattached athlete, trying to qualify for Legion Nationals. He ended up finishing first in the province in two disciplines: discus and shotput.

He needed to throw at least 44 metres (m) in discus and threw 39.83.

With that throw, he finished first in the province by three metres. That throw was also a new personal best (PB) for him, shattering his old PB by six metres.

Jorgenson also competed in the shotput.

"This was the event I held the most hope that he would be able to qualify for Legions in," Velites head coach Rachel Andres said in an email.

"The Legions qualifying standard was set up at 13.85 m. Adam threw another PB to take first with a (throw of) 13.44 m, just missing the qualifying standard. That throw also put him first in the province by just under a metre," Andres added.

On the other hand, the CALTAF competition was "a bit of a rough meet" for Eling, according to Andres.

Her first event was the shotput.

"She threw pretty well, throwing an 11.74 m. But she needed a 12.61m to make Legions in that event. She placed second, right behind her training partner, Jinaye Shomachuk," Andres wrote.

Eling also placed second in discus with a 29.13 m. The Legion standard was 35.90 m, "so she missed that one by quite a bit," Andres said.
