After a stellar performance at the 2013 55+ Alberta Winter Games Feb. 13-16, the Innisfail ladies carpet bowling team returned to the drop-in centre triumphant with bronze medals around their necks.
“It feels wonderful,” said lead Denise Niegum. “There were some good teams. We had to buckle down and make our shots.”
The senior squad played three games Thursday, three games Friday and one game Saturday. The ladies ended up winning four, losing two and tying one – making them the third best team in the entire province.
Teresa Rolvink, second, said everyone played to the best of their abilities.
“The whole thing to me was quite an experience,” she said. “I'm proud to have the team that I was on.”
Eunice Jensen, third, thoroughly enjoyed the road trip and says she hopes that stick curling will be entered as a separate event in the seniors games in future years.
“We like the competition,” she said. “We'd like to go to some more.”
Shirley Thomas, skip, brought in the necessary experience to help steer the team to lofty heights, having been to provincials once before.
“You sort of black everything out when you're playing,” she said, noting the importance of concentration.
An Airdrie team won gold and an Edmonton team came away with silver in the carpet bowling event.
