The coach of the Olds College women's varsity basketball team has decided to turn in his clipboard after leading the Broncos to a bronze-medal finish at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association tournament from March 14 to 16.
Reg Carrick said he made the decision after having coached college basketball for 16 years.
"As far as direct contact, I won't be coaching on a day-to-day basis,î he said, noting he will still be supervising women's basketball in a more limited role.
"I've been going at it pretty hard for a long time and it takes its toll personally, on the family, and somewhat professionally too. At Olds College, coaching wasn't part of my regular job. My regular job is as athletic supervisor, so kind of when you put all those factors together that's how (I) arrived at a decision,î Carrick said.
Coaching takes a lot of time over the course of eight to 10 months per year, he added.
"There's no doubt that coaching basketball is a six-day-a-week, eight to 10 months a year job so it will be less of a time (commitment),î he said.
Carrick has also coached basketball at the college level elsewhere in Alberta, in B.C., Manitoba and in the U.S.
