Carstairs hosts atom hockey tournament

CARSTAIRS - Eight teams took part in the Atom Classic Tournament held on the weekend at the Carstairs Memorial Arena.

CARSTAIRS - Eight teams took part in the Atom Classic Tournament held on the weekend at the Carstairs Memorial Arena.

The teams were split into two divisions with Carstairs B Bruins hosting the gold division with Olds, Airdrie and Chestermere, while Carstairs C Bruins hosted the black division with Southwest Calgary, Bow Valley and Okotoks.

The C Bruins ended up losing by one in the final, 5-4, to Chestermere, while the B Bruins finished tied for third place.

The C Bruins tied with Olds 6-6 and lost to Airdrie 5-4 and Chestermere 7-1 in the round-robin portion of the tournament. The team then knocked off Airdrie 5-2 in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal game.

Meanwhile, the B Bruins beat Okotoks 5-0, Bow Valley 5-1 and lost to Southwest Calgary 5-3 in the round-robin. In the semifinal, the C Bruins lost 4-1 to Okotoks.

Carstairs B Bruins coach Nathan Steingart said the players enjoyed the competition.

"Our players battled hard all weekend and had a lot of fun," said Steingart. "The teams were pretty evenly matched so it made for a great tournament."
