Despite a pair of 3-0 defeats to the Red Deer College's men's volleyball team over the weekend, Broncos head coach Rob Meckling was impressed with his squad's performance against Kings — the CCAA's top-ranked team.
“I'm actually really impressed. We're scrappy,” Meckling said after the team's home match on Nov. 22.
At 0-10, the Broncos are still searching for their first victory of the season but this year's about growth, according to Meckling, who is in his first year as head coach.
“There's no false pretense that we're specifically looking to be a championship team. This program is in a rebuild,” he said.
“We're trying to create an environment of accountability, expectation of hard work every day, trying to have small victories by doing small things really well.”
Such a victory would include holding a 21-19 edge in the second set against the 9-1 Kings, a result of good passing leading to 10 kills apiece for middle Zack Deacon and outside hitter Dylan White.
“We had good hitters in the front row that we had to get balls to in good locations. When we pass the ball well, it gives our setter an opportunity to make good decisions with the ball,” Meckling said.
“We've got easily two, three guys that would match up with any player in this conference. We just need to give our hitters an opportunity and it starts with passing.”
The Broncos will next host the Briercrest College Clippers from Nov. 28 to 29 at the Ralph Klein Centre.
