DIDSBURY -- The Mountain View Colts have long been supporters of the Rural Alberta Ride for Dad and its fight against prostate cancer. Even though the Colts have a brand new coaching staff, don't expect their support of the ride to change.
First-year head coach Rob Turville told the Gazette he and his staff are pleased to take part in the annual fundraiser, which sees the players raise money for the ride.
"Coming into this season as new coaches that was one of the events that we always heard about," said Turville. "The Colts always did a great job of it and raising money for the ride for dad. I've never really been a part of it, so coming in and coaching this year it makes you feel proud to be part of an organization that dedicates a lot of time and effort to raise money for such a great cause."
Colts captain Alan Klinck said the game and the cause are important to the players as well as management.
"We all know someone who has been affected so it's great to raise money for such a good cause," said Klinck. "It's good to see that big number on the cheque."
The cheque, for more than $13,000, was donated to the Rural Alberta Ride for Dad at Saturday's home game in Didsbury against Lomond. The game also saw a silent auction to help raise even more money for the ride for dad.
Gil Enns, president of the Rural Alberta Ride for Dad told the Gazette they are extremely pleased by the continued support of the Colts.
"They could donate to any charity but they've always given to ride for dad," said Enns. "The players and the organization spend their season getting pledges for the ride for dad. They finished up on Saturday and presented us with the cheque for all that amount they raised. They also held a silent auction with proceeds going to the ride for dad for prostate cancer research."
Over the years, the Colts have donated more than $170,000 to the Rural Alberta Ride for Dad.
