DIDSBURY - As the great philosopher Patches O'Houlihan once said, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!" OK, that might have been a line from the Vince Vaughn classic movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, but the truth is dodgeball can be a lot of fun.
Thanks largely to that 2004 movie, dodgeball has gained popularity and is now played all over North America.
With upwards of 50 people signing up for the six-week program, recreational dodgeball in Didsbury has proven a success already. The program, which is put on by the town's recreation department, runs every Tuesday for six weeks until May 8.
Sarah Eichhorst, administrative assistant for community services for the Town of Didsbury, said it's been a huge success.
"We wanted to be able to offer a casual, fun fitness program aimed exclusively at adults and dodgeball seemed like the perfect thing to do," said Eichhorst. "The teams come out, socialize, play three or four games and just have fun. Our last week of dodgeball will be on May 8 and we'll be having a tournament style night where one team will be crowned Didsbury Dodgeball Champions."
Eichhorst said the town will be starting up Dodgeball 2.0 right after the first iteration ends. The second session starts on May 15 and will run every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. until June 19.
Anyone interested in signing up can register a team or as an individual by contacting Eichhorst at 403-335-3391 or by email at [email protected].
