The Innisfail Eagles are tied for first in the Chinook Hockey League standings after defeating the Ft. Saskatchewan Chiefs 4-2 Oct. 27.

The Eagles faced off against the Chiefs at home. The Ft. Saskatchewan team had been undefeated before coming to Innisfail.

“The game was awesome,” said coach Brian Sutter. “We played the first-place team and we played really good.”

The Chiefs are a skilled veteran team while the Eagles are young, he said, but good puck management, and strong defence, goaltending and offence helped the younger squad get the win.

“We didn't give them a lot,” he said. “Ft. Saskatchewan played really well but we played just a bit better.”

Three of the defencemen who suited up for Saturday's game hadn't even played in a single match yet this season, Sutter said, but all of them played well.

The Eagles scored the only goal in the first period, putting three in the net during the second while the Chiefs managed one. The Chiefs got the only point on the board during the third period but it wasn't enough to catch up with the Eagles' lead.

Goalie Todd-Daniel Lafontaine stopped 40 of 42 shots on the Innisfail net.

Innisfail's now tied in the standings with Ft. Saskatchewan and the Bentley Generals, each with three wins and one loss.

The Eagles' next game is at home Nov. 2, with puck drop at 8:30 p.m.
