INNISFAIL - The Innisfail Female PeeWee Rotary Club Flyers wrapped up a great season at the end of March.
The team won the Zone 4 championship title last month in a thrilling double overtime game.
That win qualified them for provincials in Ponoka from March 23 to 26.
"That was probably the most exciting series I've been a part of as a coach," said Randy Graham, head coach. "It went into overtime and we ended up winning in the second overtime period with under a minute left."
Provincials proved to be a tougher challenge.
"It was a really tough tournament. There were some really good teams there," he said, noting they lost Game 1 to Olds and Game 2 to Okotoks.
They won Game 3 against a Calgary team but didn't qualify for the medal round and finished their provincial run at the end of round robin.
Nonetheless, Graham said it was a great experience.
"Everybody had a blast; the girls played hard. The second game against Okotoks, I felt they deserved a better fate," said Graham. "That score really wasn't representative of how the game went. It was a very close game and we controlled a lot of the play but didn't get the bounces."
The girls played in Tier 2 (blue) division of the Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League this season. They made it to the second round of league playoffs this year as well, and finished in third place in their division.
"Our girls are a real team. They bonded so well; they all get along," said Graham, noting how rewarding it was for all coaches to see the girls' progress throughout the year.
"The girls improved a lot in the season," said Graham. "They played to their potential for most of the year and us coaches were really proud of them."
