INNISFAIL – School is out and many kids are enjoying summer activities.
The Innisfail Fish and Game Association welcomes children and their families for its first Kids Can Catch Day on July 6.
The event takes place at the Wayne Lewis Pond in Spruce View from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kids Can Catch is a program offered through the Alberta Conservation Association each summer to help teach children how to fish and promote proper care of fish as well as for family fun.
“Kids Can Catch is a provincewide program in which Alberta Conservation Association teams up with clubs like ours to create a free family fishing event to hook new and young anglers on fishing,” said Doug Roberts, organizer and member of Innisfail Fish and Game Association.
“Alberta Conservation Association manages the program and promotes the Kids Can Catch event,” he added.
It is being held on a weekend when everyone in the province can fish withour a licence.
“On our (event) day it is free because it’s a free fishing weekend in Alberta on July 6 and 7,” said Roberts. “Nobody needs to have a licence for those two days.”
Roberts noted that children must be accompanied by a parent for the event and wear life jackets. Some fishing rods will be available for families that don’t have their own.
“The Alberta Conservation Association has donated some fishing rods to us,” said Roberts. “It’s a private pond owned by Wayne Lewis from Spruce View. It’s on his property and he’s graciously allowed us to use his pond,” he added, noting the pond is stocked with trout.
Roberts said he’s anticipating a busy day.
“I think there’ll be a good turnout,” said Roberts. “Kids can keep the fish or they can release them back into the pond.”
The Kids Can Catch Day event will be held at 36280 Rge. Rd. 31, about one kilometre north of the Spruce View Co-op on the west side.
