The Olds College futsal teams tuned up for the next Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference tournament by playing a set of games at Prairie Bible College in Three Hills on the weekend.
The men's team finished with a record of 1-1-1, tying the host Pilots 4-4 on Jan. 24 while losing 8-2 to a Prairie alumni squad the following day. The Broncos beat the King's University College Eagles 5-2. The women, meanwhile, finished with an identical record, beating the Pilots 6-0, tying the Eagles 1-1 and losing to the Red Deer College Queens 3-2.
Humberto Aspillaga, the men's coach, said he was pleased with the development of the players during the tournament.
ìIt takes a little bit of time to develop players when they're coming from high school and everyone is performing better. We were more relaxed playing and we had more time to play our plays,î he said.
Mark Oxer, the women's coach, said he thought the team played well and had a good chance to win all their games.
ìWe had a shot on goal against Red Deer right at the end that the goalie barely stopped and the ball was on the (goal) line. We had opportunities to win that game. Same thing with the game against the Kings, we just didn't finish,î he said.
The tournament had similar calibre teams to what the Broncos will face in their next conference tournament from February 7 to 9 in Lloydminster at Lakeland College.
ìIt was a good opportunity. I think the girls proved that they can play with the other ACAC schools,î Oxer said.
