Over this winter, the Olds Golf Club plans to hammer out a policy regarding cannabis (marijuana) consumption on the course, club pro and manager Wade Bearchell says.

However, he suspects people have consumed cannabis on the course long before now.

On Oct. 17, it became legal to consume recreational marijuana across the country.

"We're in the process of developing a policy over the winter. We talked about it at the last board meeting," Bearchell told the Albertan. "I've talked to Mountain View County to find out what their rules are going to be and then what we can do."

But he suggested that might be a case of shutting the barn door after the horse has left.

"You know, let's face it: if people want to smoke marijuana on the golf course it's (probably) been going on for years and years," Bearchell said.

He pointed out the policy will have to be crafted carefully.

"It has to be something that makes sense. We just don't want it to impact other people's enjoyment," Bearchell said.

However, he figures golf course officials have lots of time to come up with that document.

"I don't think anyone's going to be smoking any weed out here in the wintertime -- other than the golf pro, maybe," Bearchell said.
